Cotton
55 x 72 inches
Process
It started with a reference photo, a staging of Hamlet that the quilt recipient designed costumes for, in warm browns and whites. I was thinking about the thrust stage for the overall composition, and about patched tile and linoleum while I worked on the smaller panels. I was especially inspired by the patchwork floor at Nom Wah Tea Parlor in Manhattan.
Loosely based on a traditional Courthouse Steps layout, this was my first large-scale improv piece, meaning I didn’t design it before I started cutting, arranging, and sewing. It’s also my most personal quilt so far. I was in a heavy place while making this, grieving the unexpected death of a beloved aunt. Some of the patchwork seams opened while I was quilting this piece, and I mended them as though they were wounds, embedding the act of care and healing into the quilt.
Hand quilted. Machine and hand pieced and bound.
Quilted in diagonal waves.
Backed with a vintage cotton muslin sheet.
