Story Quilt
Quilt Details
May–Nov 2023
Cotton and mixed-fiber found fabrics
36 x 36 inches
Process
This quilt was made during a month-long daily practice workshop with Heidi Parkes. Each day for 30 days, she issued a new prompt or set of constraints in embroidery or appliqué. The process reminded me of Sol Lewitt wall drawings—a series of written rules to execute in order to build up to the final artwork.
Mine is a story quilt about spring, and unthawing from a winter of grief.
I documented things that were healing and meaningful for me: walks in the park with my friend, blue jays in the trees behind my apartment, a flower garden in Baltimore, a calendar of loved ones’ birthdays, and my favorite Alexander Girard keychain which I lost, then found.
I used thin thread and tiny stitches to quilt a pattern of expanding concentric circles, quilting straight across the embroidery and appliqué.
Hand pieced, quilted, and bound, using scraps and vintage fabrics.
